Pathogen Reduction. Pathogen reduction is a post-collection blood product manipulation process used for many years in Europe but only relatively recently approved in the United States. A substance is added to platelet and plasma products (not yet red cell products) after collection.

Method for monitoring hand hygiene compliance

While clean, disinfected hands are widely recognized as a principle means for controlling the spread of infections, disease, and similar health problems to both self and others, the prompt and repeated application of such materials as soap and water or waterless gels is necessary to maintain sanitary hands. So well recognized is this fact that many professional and governmental guidelines backed by regulations have been drawn to enforce compliance. This invention relates to compliance monitoring of hand sanitizing fluids and gels used to reduce the hand-borne transmission of pathogens. Disclosed is a simple, low-cost method of which a key aspect is the employment of a wristband dispenser with plural individual applications of hand sanitizing fluid in a convenient dispensing form. Inclusion of a use activated timing device provides a means of monitoring an individual's elapsed time since last use.

Systems and methods for pathogen inactivation in blood using UV irradiation while minimizing heat transfer thereto

The systems and methods for pathogen reduction in donor blood operates by exposure of blood to UVC irradiation. Unwanted wavelengths of light, mostly in the infrared spectra, may be precluded from reaching blood by providing a layer of IR-absorbing fluid positioned between blood and the source of UV irradiation, whereby minimizing energy absorption and heating of blood. Some embodiments further disclose a system configured to utilize the same IR-absorbing fluid to actively cool blood by flowing along the flow path thereof.

This invention relates to devices and a method promoting the convenient use of hand sterilizing fluids and gels applied to reduce the hand-borne transmission of pathogens. While clean, disinfected hands are widely recognized as a principle means for controlling the spread of infections, disease, and similar health problems to both self and others, the prompt and repeated application of such materials as soap and water or waterless alcohol gels is necessary for maintaining a sanitary hand condition. This is particularly true for nurses, health care providers, veterinarians, elementary teachers, food handlers and others where rapid and continuous movement between patients, clients and tasks provides optimum conditions for cross-contamination. This invention of a convenient, wrist-mounted dispenser of hand sterilizing fluids in a blister package format advances the use of such materials to effectively control the spread of hand-borne pathogens.

Process for treating septage

A process and apparatus for the treatment of septage, particularly grease trap waste, is disclosed. The inventive process will convert the septage into Biosolids (sludge) and water dischargeable to the environment. The treated septage achieves pathogen reduction, and reduced vector attraction. Treatment of septage by pasteurization causes the destruction of harmful pathogens. Pasteurization of septage having high water content provides for even temperature elevation and distribution of heat within the thermal mass of the septage allowing for consistent pathogen destruction. An alkaline compound is utilized to form a filter cake from the solids fraction of the pasteurized septage preventing vector attraction, while producing a beneficial bio-solid. The liquid fraction of the septage is treated by biological process allowing for its discharge into the environment.

Suction Apparatus with a Flushable Drainage Line

A suction apparatus for aspirating a fluid from a human or animal body by means of negative pressure comprises a drainage connection for a drainage line in order to remove the fluid from the body. A vacuum source generates a negative pressure at the drainage connection. A fluid connection container collects the sucked-up fluid. The drainage line can be flushed with air by an auxiliary connection and an auxiliary line connected to the latter. In order to reduce the entraining of pathogens, a sterilizing cell is provided. The supplied air is treated in the latter in such a manner that pathogens contained in said air are modified and thereby rendered harmless.

Method for preventing damage to or rejuvenating a cellular blood component using mitochondrial enhancer

This invention provides methods for treating cellular blood components and other cells containing mitochondria to improve vital qualities of the cells by contacting the cells with a mitochondrial enhancer to the cells. Mitochondrial enhancers prevent damage to and rejuvenate mitochondria and cells containing mitochondria. Mitochondrial enhancers include alloxazines and related compounds, such as riboflavin. Cells are optionally treated with photoradiation to reduce pathogens with may be present, before, after, and / or during treatment with mitochondrial enhancer. Treating with mitochondrial enhancer enables utilization of higher photoradiation energies, which achieves better pathogen reduction. When platelets are treated with mitochondrial enhancer, treated platelets may be stored for longer times than untreated platelets before they are administered to patients.
