Abstract

The invention relates to a head column pump cycle. Specifically, a process and system for acrylonitrile and HCN recovery includes a head column system that operates to reduce head column condenser load and reduce equipment while maintaining desired purity and specifications with minimal increase in reboiler load. In one aspect, the process includes providing a feed stream including acrylonitrile, HCN, and water to a head column; distilling the feed stream in a head column to produce a head column overhead stream comprising HCN and a bottoms liquid stream comprising acrylonitrile; removing a side stream from a side fraction of the head column comprising water and organic matter; separating at least some water and organic matter from the side stream to provide an organic stream; returning the organic material flow to the head fraction tower; and adjusting the ratio of the amount of side stream removed from the side fraction of the head column to the amount of organic stream returning to the head column below the side fraction to provide 500 ppm or less HCN to the bottom liquid stream.
