Embodiment Construction

[0035] The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which preferred embodiments of the invention are shown. However, the present invention may be implemented in different forms, and the present invention should not be limited to these examples, which are provided only to make the disclosure more thorough and complete, and to facilitate those skilled in the art to practice the present invention. Like numbers refer to like parts throughout.

[0036] ADSL

[0037] As is understood by those skilled in the art, an ADSL communication system includes ADSL transceivers at each end of a subscriber line. Generally, the ADSL transceivers of a subscriber line communicate with each other to establish the spectral response of the subscriber line. Once the spectral response information has been exchanged, the transmission of data can usually begin. The sending ADSL transceiver converts data in digital format, such as images from a camera or an Inte...

Abstract

Multi-drop Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Loop (ADSL) modems have at least two sets of digital front end circuitry which allow for simultaneous connections to at least two local loops. A shared DSL modem is operably associated with each of the two sets of digital front end circuitry and transmits and receives data to and from the digital front end circuitry. A digital interface is operably associated with the shared DSL modem and is configured to communicate with an external network.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to communication systems, and more particularly to discrete multi-tone communication systems and digital subscriber line communication systems. Background technique [0002] A remote client personal computer (PC) is usually connected to the Internet by means of an analog modem over a twisted-pair transmission line telephone network such as figure 1 shown. Unfortunately, current analog modems are limited to 56,000 bits per second (56Kbps) due to various constraints of current telephone networks. [0003] Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ASDL) technology is currently being developed to increase bandwidth over twisted pair transmission lines by an order of magnitude. ADSL is based on the Discrete Multitone (DMT) transmission system. The transmission rate of ADSL on the twisted-pair transmission line can be as high as 8 megabits per second (8Mbps) in the downstream direction (ie, toward the PC direction), and u...
