Embodiment 1

[0052] Mix the following ingredients together to make a solution: ingredient ratio% (w / v)] PHMB (polyhexamethylene biguanide) 1ppm EDTA disodium salt 0.05 tyloxapol 0.025 tromethamine 1.2HPMC ( Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) 0.15 Sodium chloride 0.37 Water (USP) Make up 100% pH (adjust with HCl) 7.5

[0053] About 3 ml of the resulting solution is placed in vials containing (storage) lenses containing fatty, oily deposits, hydrophilic or soft contact lenses. The contact lenses are kept in solution at room temperature for at least about 4 hours. This treatment effectively disinfects the contact lenses. It was also found that most of the deposits previously deposited on the lenses had been removed. This indicates that the solution has essentially negative contact lens cleaning ability.

[0054] Afterwards, the lens is removed from the solution and placed in the wearer's eye for a safe and comfortable fit. Alternatively, remove the lens from the solution and rinse with anothe...

Embodiment 2

[0056] The procedure of Example 1 was repeated except that the lenses were wiped and rinsed with different amounts of solution prior to placing the lenses in the vials. After at least 4 hours (in the bottle) the lenses are removed from the solution and then placed in the wearer's eye for a safe and comfortable fit.

Embodiment 3

[0058] The solution of Example 1 was used as an extended-life soak solution for hydrophilic contact lenses. Accordingly, about 3 ml of this solution is placed in a vial, and the contact lenses are soaked in this solution at room temperature for at least about 60 hours. After soaking, the lens is removed from the solution and placed in the wearer's eye for a safe and comfortable fit. Alternatively, remove the lens from the solution and rinse with another volume of this solution, then place the rinsed lens in the wearer's eye for safe and comfortable fit.

Abstract

Solutions useful to clean contact lenses include a surfactant component in an effective amount; and a viscosity inducing component, preferably selected from cellulosic derivatives and more preferably hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, in an effective amount. Such solutions, which may include one or more additional components, have substantial contact lens cleaning benefits which, ultimately, lead to ocular health advantages and avoidance of problems caused by contact lens wear.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The present invention relates to compositions for treating, eg, cleaning, disinfecting, soaking, conditioning and wetting contact lenses. More particularly, the present invention relates to multi-purpose solutions for treating contact lenses such as removing deposits from contact lenses, disinfecting contact lenses, soaking, conditioning and / or wetting contact lenses, and the like. It provides basic contact lens treatment such as cleaning benefits to the user of this solution. [0002] Contact lenses require regular handling, such as cleaning, disinfection, soaking, etc., due to the tendency of various microorganisms and other substances to deposit on the lenses and / or to provide the lenses with a suitable condition for safe and comfortable wearing. [0003] Fu U.S. Patent 4,323,467 discloses an aqueous composition comprising poly(oxyethylene)-poly(oxypropylene) substituted ethylenediamine surfactants, certain cellulose derived polymers that...
