Disclosed are an apparatus and a method for measuring the speed of a moving body using an accelerometer. A value of earth's gravitational acceleration component is detected from the measurements from the accelerometer and is removed from the acceleration value. Then, the acceleration value, after removal of the earth's gravitational acceleration component, is used to obtain the speed of the moving body. The earth's gravitational acceleration component is detected using a movement average at a point of time when the speed of the moving body is to be measured. By using the magnitude of a difference between a value obtained by removing an x-axis movement average from an x-axis measurement from the two-axis accelerometer and another value obtained by removing a y-axis movement average from a y-axis measurement from the two-axis accelerometer, it is possible to regulate a window for calculating the movement average and a weight value to each of the measurements included in the window. The present invention saves cost by reducing the number of expensive gyroscopes in implementing a speed measuring apparatus for vehicles. In addition, the speed measuring apparatus designed according to the present invention is superior to that designed according to the prior art in performance and improves the accuracy of position estimation in position estimation apparatuses for vehicles.

A spectroscopic sensor for measuring flat sheet product is disclosed. The disclosed sensor uses a combination of spectrometers and single-channel detectors and filters together with a broadband source of illumination to optimally measure multiple properties of a flat sheet product. A spectrometer is used to measure over a spectral range where an easily configurable set of wavelength channels is needed and where the signal-to-noise ratios and spectral resolutions of the channels are consistent with the spectral range and number of pixels of the spectrometer; while one or more single channel detector and filter combinations are used to measure, with high signal-to-noise ratio, at specific wavelengths within or outside the spectral range of the spectrometer(s). Therefore, the single channel detectors can be used to complement the information provided by a spectrometer or to extend the working range of a spectrometer by providing single wavelength measurements anywhere in the visible, near-IR or mid-IR spectral regions.

Disclosed are an apparatus and a method for measuring the speed of a moving body using an accelerometer. A value of earth's gravitational acceleration component is detected from the measurements from the accelerometer and is removed from the acceleration value. Then, the acceleration value, after removal of the earth's gravitational acceleration component, is used to obtain the speed of the moving body. The earth's gravitational acceleration component is detected using a movement average at a point of time when the speed of the moving body is to be measured. Glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness in the global world. It is a multifactorial disease with several risk factors, of which intraocular pressure (IOP) is the most important. IOP measurements are used for glaucoma diagnosis and patient monitoring. IOP has wide diurnal fluctuation, and is dependent on body posture, so the occasional measurements done by the eye care expert in clinic can be misleading. We provide an implantable sensor, based on microfluidic principles, which in one example has 1 mmHg limit of detection, high sensitivity and excellent reproducibility. This sensor has an optical interface, which enables IOP to be read with, for example, a cell phone camera. The design, fabrication, along with the option of self-monitoring are promising steps toward better patient care and treatment for this devastating disease.
