Problems solved by technology

[0008] Yet, adopt the method disclosed in above-mentioned patent, can not make unsaturated fatty acid react easily and form calcium salt
The resulting product is not a free-flowing pellet, but tends to harden into a hard lump that cannot be milled into fine grains suitable for livestock consumption
The resulting material also lacks storage stability

Embodiment 1

[0059] 13.8 lbs of calcium oxide was added to an upright mixer (equipped with Cowles type mixing blades) containing 69.6 lbs of CLA-60. CLA-60 contains a concentration of 65% by weight CLA and 95% by weight free fatty acids. The total unsaturated fatty acid content is 90% by weight. Heat the CLA-60 to 60°C before adding calcium oxide. After the calcium oxide was uniformly dispersed, 10.8 lbs of water was added and the temperature of the mixture was raised to 120°C. Stirring is continued until a uniform homogeneous mixture is obtained, which is then poured from the container into a plate, where the reaction is complete, and the product is then cooled. The final product was milled to obtain free-flowing non-dusty granules with a total fat content of approximately 83% by weight.

Embodiment 2

[0061] 33.8 lbs of palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) was added to 68.5 lbs of CLA-60 which had been heated to 60°C and stirred until a homogeneous homogeneous mixture was obtained. Continue to add 18.4 lbs of calcium oxide with stirring. After the calcium oxide was uniformly dispersed, 15.2 lbs of water was added and the temperature of the mixture was raised to 120°C. The product was collected as in Example 1 (its fat content was 85% by weight).

[0062] Free-flowing obtained despite reduced calcium oxide (relative to fat content)

[0063] of granular products. The content of calcium oxide corresponds to 20% by weight (relative to CLA) and 14% by weight (relative to PFAD).

Embodiment 3

[0065] Adopt following composition, react by embodiment 2 method:

[0066] 4,884 lb CLA

[0067] 2,085 lbs PFAD

[0068] 1,504 lbs calcium oxide

[0069] 1,716 lbs water

[0070] The resulting free-flowing granular product had a total fat content of 82.25% by weight.

Abstract

A method for the preparation of free-flowing calcium salts of highly unsaturated fatty acids, which includes the steps of:(a) providing a fatty acid feedstock consisting essentially of:(i) from about 50 to about 95% by weight of unsaturated C:16-C:22 fatty acids;(ii) from about 5 to about 40% by weight of saturated C:14-C:22 fatty acids; and(iii) no more than about 6% by weight of moisture, insolubles and unsaponifiables, with no more than about 20% by weight of the unsaturated feedstock being in the form of glycerides;(b) adding to the unsaturated feedstock from about 1.0 to about 2.5 equivalents of calcium oxide relative to the unsaturated feedstock, so that a reactive admixture is formed; and(c) adding to the reactive admixture from about 2 to about 5 equivalents of water relative to the calcium oxide, so that the calcium oxide hydrates and neutralizes the fatty acids to form the calcium salts;provided that when less than 1.75 equivalents of calcium oxide is added, the unsaturated feedstock comprises at least 25% by weight of the saturated fatty acids and is heated to a temperature above its melting point before the step of adding the calcium oxide.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a rumen bypass feed additive which can be used as an energy source for ruminants. This method converts highly unsaturated fatty acids into their calcium salts. In particular, the present invention relates to a process for the preparation of calcium salts of unsaturated fatty acids useful as nutritional supplements, such as conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs). Feeding the calcium salt of the present invention to domestic animals yields an abundance of interesting unsaturated fatty acids. [0002] CLAs are the focus of many research projects looking to exploit and exploit their nutritional, therapeutic and pharmacological properties. In 1978, researchers at the University of Wisconsin discovered that a substance in cooked beef inhibited mutagenesis. This substance was identified as CLA. [0003] The biological activities related to CLAs are many and complex. Its anti-carcinogen...
