[0063] Preparation of UV absorber-modified polyamide sliding films for flexographic printing plates

[0064] Conventional sliding films are modified with UV absorbers to make films opaque to actinic radiation. Nitrocellulose, an autoxidizing adhesive, is also added to enhance the mask's sensitivity to laser ablation. The masks used had the approximate composition of the dried films in Table 3.

[0069] Polyamide slip modified with UV absorbers and IR absorbers for flexographic printing plates Preparation of moving membrane

[0070] An IR absorbing dye, ADS 830A, available from American Dye Source (Montreal, Canada), was added to the UV absorber modified mask of Example 1. The mask absorbs 99.9% of actinic radiation. Through the addition of an IR absorbing dye, the mask is made sensitive to an IR laser operating at a wavelength of 830nm, which is typically used in flexo plate setters. The mask used had the approximate composition of the dried film in Table 4:

[0076] Preparation of Multilayer Mask Coatings for Flexographic Printing Plates

[0077] In order to overcome the drawbacks described in Example 2, a multilayer coating was used as the sliding film. see Figure 1-2 , the multilayer sliding film 12 includes an ultraviolet absorbing layer 14 and an infrared absorbing layer 16 . The UV absorbing layer 14 absorbs 99.9% of actinic UV radiation. The ultraviolet absorbing layer 14 had the approximate composition of the dry film in Table 5 and a thickness of about 1-1.5 µm. The infrared absorbing layer 16 is located below the ultraviolet absorbing layer 14 and adjacent to the photocurable layer 18 . The infrared absorbing layer 16 is designed to be sensitive to IR laser light operating at a wavelength of 830nm, which is typically employed in flexo plate setters. The presence of a contrast dye in the UV absorbing layer 14 allows for image contrast in the final laser imaged plate. The infrared absorbing layer 16 had the approximate...

Abstract

The present invention provides a method of making a laser imaged printing plate. First, a solid, uncured printing plate is modified with both a UV absorber and an IR absorber. This is most conveniently done by constructing a multilayer slip film (12) comprising at least two layers wherein at least one layer (14) comprises a strong UV absorber, and wherein at least one other layer (16) comprises an IR absorber having high absorptivity. The multilayer slip film (12) is already adapted for use with a printing plate and is applied in the usual fashion to the surface of the uncured printing plate. The printing plate with the multilayer slip film (12) is ablated from the photopolymer (18) using an IR laser operating at a selected wavelength to create an in situ negative. The resulting negative can be subjected to typical UV flood exposure and development.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to printing plates which can be produced without negatives. In particular it relates to laser imageable printing plates. This plate is especially good for flexography, but can also be used for offset and lithography. Background technique [0002] Flexographic printing is a printing process usually used for high-intensity runs. Flexographic printing is used for printing on various substrates such as paper, cardboard pulp, corrugated paper, film, foil and laminate. Newspapers and grocery bags are prominent examples. Rough surfaces and stretch films can be printed economically only by flexographic printing. A flexographic printing plate is a relief printing plate with pixels raised in open areas. Generally, the plates are somewhat soft and pliable enough to wrap around the printing cylinder and last long enough to print millions of copies. [0003] Such plates offer printing presses several advantages simply based on their dura...
