Abstract

The present invention provides a foam cushion, a method of making foam cushion, and a method of using the foam cushion. The foam cushion is formed from: (a) at least one of rubber and a resin; (b) a blowing agent; (c) a polymeric adhesion modifier; (d) a decomposition accelarating agent, and (e) a cross-linking agent.

Background technique [0001] Carpet backing, or carpet underlayment, is often used (i.e., placed under a carpet) to make the carpet feel more comfortable, to act as a carpet shock absorber to prolong the life of the carpet, and / or to insulate the floor. Several types of carpet backing are currently in use, such as rubber in the form of waffles, foam padding, rebond, plank rubber, fibers, berber padding and expanded foam. The use of many of these types of carpet backings presents several disadvantages. For example, the rubber used to produce rubber carpet backing in wafer biscuit form is held together with a clay-type binder that breaks down as it is used. Using foam backing often results in too much up and down movement of the carpet, causing the backing to fail quickly. Rebond carpet backing contains chemicals such as 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol-BHT, which can have adverse effects on certain carpets.
