Embodiment 1

[0086] Embodiment 1: poly(lactic acid) preparation

[0087] 1000 g of D,L-lactic acid (Aldrich 85%) was added to a 2000 ml 4-neck flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer, temperature probe / controller, nitrogen purifier, inclined condenser and heating mantle. An additional 1.0 g of butylated hydroxytoluene was added. Set the initial temperature to 100 °C. After 2 hours, the temperature was raised to 120°C. After a further 2 hours, the temperature was raised to 130°C, then 140°C for 3 hours, and 150°C for another 2 hours. After cooling, the resulting mixture was a thick honey-like light gray liquid. Analysis by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) showed a molecular weight of 250 g / mol (90 for lactic acid). It is water insoluble.

Embodiment 2

[0088] Embodiment 2: poly(lactic acid) preparation

[0089] 1000 g of D,L-lactic acid (Aldrich 85%) was added to a 2000 ml 4-neck flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer, temperature probe / controller, nitrogen purifier, inclined condenser and heating mantle. An additional 10.0 g of zinc lactate (Purac) was added. Set the initial temperature to 100 °C. After 2 hours, the temperature was raised to 120°C. After a further 2 hours, the temperature was raised to 130°C, then 140°C for 3 hours, and 150°C for another 2 hours. After cooling, the resulting mixture was a thick honey-like almost colorless liquid. Analysis by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) showed a molecular weight of 210 g / mol (90 for lactic acid). It is water soluble.

Embodiment 3

[0090] Embodiment 3: the preparation of zein solution

[0091] Zein (Freeman Industries, Inc., qualified grade) was dissolved in a mixture of 87 wt% isopropanol (13% water) to form a 10% solution (10 g zein + 90 g solvent).

Abstract

Prolamine blends with oligomeric poly(hydroxyl ester) such as poly(lactic acid) and methods of preparing same areprovided. The blends can be used for making chewing gum bases, especially as biodegradable chewing gum bases. The blends are also useful for making other edible products as well as eco-friendly packaging films, coatings, adhesives, and encapsulation vehicles for medicament delivery and the like.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The present invention relates to prolamin mixtures. More specifically, the present invention relates to edible and biodegradable prolamin compositions. [0002] In some applications, prolamins have been used in consumer products. For example, zein is a water-insoluble prolamin (protein) obtained from corn. Zein is edible and readily biodegradable. Therefore, zein is a very attractive material for food applications. [0003] Additionally, zein has been used in industrial applications. In this regard, zein has been used to produce materials such as packaging films, coatings and adhesives. Typically, when heated sufficiently, zein will thermally decompose rather than melt. This property is due to its strong hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, usually zein is used in the form of fine powder or alcohol / water solution. This creates processing difficulties that limit the application and use of zein. [0004] In food products, due to the desirable ...
