Abstract

The present invention relates to the electrolytic recovery of metals, and more particularly to methods and apparatus for producing cathode plates suitable for such electrolytic recovery. A first aspect of the invention comprises a method of providing a conductive coating on a cathode plate, the method comprising, inverting and submerging an upper portion of the cathode plate adjacent at least one anode in an electrolytic cell, and applying an electric current to electroplate the upper portion of the cathode plate , wherein each anode comprises: i) a first base adapted to be positioned adjacent to the support bar of the cathode plate; ii) a second extension connected to and extending from the base, and A sheet adapted to be positioned adjacent to the cathode plate, wherein each of the anodes is profiled so that, in use, a coating of consistent thickness is plated on the support rod and cathode sheet. A second aspect of the present invention provides an anode for electroplating the upper portion of a cathode plate having a support rod and cathode tabs, said anode comprising: i) a first exposed bottom which is longer than said support rod and in which having a constant cross-sectional shape over its length; ii) a second exposed portion connected to and extending from said base and having a length shorter than the width of said cathode tab. A third aspect of the present invention provides a method of reconditioning a cathode plate comprising the steps of: removing a conductive coating on a support rod and said cathode plate, and then applying a current density to said cathode plate in a deplating bath , such that the level of the current density is sufficient to etch exposed metal below the liquid level of the deplating bath, but insufficient to preferentially corrode any solder connection between the support rod and the cathode tab.
