A nonflammable non-aqueous electrolyte that enables enhancing the charge and discharge characteristics of lithium-ion battery; and a lithium-ion battery comprising a positive electrode containing a lithium transition metal oxide capable of occlusion and release of lithium, a negative electrode containing a carbon material capable of occlusion and release of lithium and a nonflammable non-aqueous electrolyte. The nonflammable non-aqueous electrolyte is in particular one comprising an additive of ternary or more-component mixture, a lithium salt of high concentration and a phosphoric ester as main solvent characterized in that the additive of ternary or more-component mixture comprises at least one member selected from among each of three compound groups, namely, compound group (a) consisting of vinylene carbonate compounds, compound group (b) consisting of vinyl acetate compounds, alkylmethyl carbonate compounds and vinylethylene carbonate compounds and compound group (c) consisting of 2-pyrrolidinone compounds, cycloalkyl compounds and cyclopentanone compounds.
