Embodiment Construction

[0034] FIG. 1 illustrates a multiprocessor computer system 100, which generally includes a plurality of host computers 110, 112, 114, which are also referred to as "hosts." Hosts 110, 112, 114 are interconnected with main link 116, which may include, for example, coupling links, intercoupling channels, integrated cluster buses, or other suitable links. In alternative embodiments, one, two, four or more hosts may be used instead of three hosts 110, 112, 114 as in the illustrated example. System 100 also includes timer 118 and coupling device 120 .

[0035] Each host 110, 112, 114 is itself a microprocessor system. Each host 110, 112, 114 may be implemented with the same type (or a different type) of digital processing unit. In one particular example, hosts 110, 112, 114 each comprise an IBM zSeries Parallel Sysplex server, such as zSeries 900, running one or more z Operating Systems (z / OS). Another example of a suitable digital processing unit is an IBM S / 390 server running ...

Abstract

Disclosed are a method and system of tracking real time use of I / O control blocks on a processing unit basis, in a multiprocessing system, such that in the case of a processing unit failure, a list accurately and concisely identifies the control blocks that need to be recovered. This eliminates the need to scan all the I / O control blocks, greatly reducing the overall system recovery time and minimizing impact to the rest of the running system. The preferred embodiment of the invention uses a task control block structure to record which I / O control blocks are in use by each Processing Unit. Also, the lock word structure defined in the I / O control blocks is provided with an index back into the task control block to facilitate managing the task control block entries.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to computer systems, and more particularly to multiprocessing systems. More specifically, the present invention relates to state tracking and recovery in multiprocessing computing systems. Background technique [0002] Multiprocessor computer systems are becoming increasingly important in modern computing because combining multiple processors increases processing bandwidth and generally increases throughput, reliability, and serviceability. A multiprocessing computing system performs various tasks using multiple processing elements, which may include multiple individual processors linked in a network, or multiple software processes or threads working concurrently in a cooperative environment. [0003] Many early multiprocessor systems consisted of separate computer systems called partitioned systems. More recently, multiprocessor systems have been formed by logically partitioning one or more computer systems to...
