Problems solved by technology

However, performing this type of antenna adjustment will usually result in too little overlap (by reducing beamwidth and possibly increasing gain) or too much overlap (by increasing beamwidth, possibly losing antenna gain)
In the former case, due to this too small handover area, the mobile unit's handover process is not completed when the radio conditions deteriorate, resulting in the loss of the ongoing communication session
In the latter case, the signal energy of adjacent antenna elements will overlap over a large area, causing interference problems and poor utilization of signal energy

Abstract

The invention relates to adjusting the shape of the antenna beam of a directional antenna in a communications system. According to the invention, the antenna beam is divided into at least a handover beam sector and a main beam sector. The shape of the at least two beam sectors are then adjusted based on different requirements and objectives. The shape of handover beam sector is adjusted based on the handover parameter settings of the communications system, e.g. by adjusting the angular interval of this handover beam sector based on the parameter settings. Optionally, the shape of the main beam sector is adjusted by maximizing the antenna gain of the directional antenna within this beam sector.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to directional antenna elements in radio communication systems, and in particular to optimizing the antenna beam shape of directional antenna elements in such systems. Background technique [0002] Conventionally, in a radio communication system a plurality of base stations or radio base stations with associated antenna units are arranged to provide the associated radio coverage of the system. Such an antenna unit is then responsible for enabling communication services to mobile units located within its associated radio coverage area. In the art, so-called omni-directional antenna units may be provided in base stations for providing general radio coverage around the base station. However, directional or sectored antenna elements that cover different sectors with different principal point directions are often used in conjunction with base stations. Thus, in such a case, multiple directional antennas may be provi...
