After a further 2 h, the addition of styrene oxide was complete, as indicated by gas chromatography with a residual styrene oxide content of less than 0.1 wt%. Subsequently, 339.2 g (7.71 mol) of ethylene oxide were rapidly metered into the reactor at such a rate that the internal temperature did not exceed 120° C. and the pressure did not exceed 6 bar. After the introduction of ethylene oxide was complete, the temperature was maintained at 115°C until a constant gauge pressure indicated the end of the subsequent reaction.
