Electrostatic loudspeaker capable of dispersing sound both horizontally and vertically

ActiveUS20070242844A1Improved dispersion of soundIncreased angular dispersion of soundElectrostatic transducer loudspeakersFrequency/directions obtaining arrangementsEffect lightEngineering
An acoustic transducer, specifically an electrostatic loudspeaker (ESL) providing curvature in two directions for improved dispersion of sound waves. The compound curvature also provides a virtual focus of the propagated sound waves for accurate reproduction of musical program material recorded with standard single-point microphones. The highly directional nature of high frequency sound waves requires that a flat or cylindrical electrostatic transducer must be physically tall to allow a listener to either recline or stand. The two-axis curved structure enables a compact form of ESL to be realized, including bookshelf type loudspeakers whereas all known commercial units are comparable in height to that of a human listener. The individual curved ESL panels can also be readily combined to create larger transducer assemblies including omni-directional units. A preferred stator panel hole-geometry is included for improved high voltage operation of coated perforated metal stator panels, and methods of forming the metal panel are described. The artistic nature of the two-dimensionally curved electrostatic transducer also lends itself to other non-traditional forms such as integration into lighting fixtures and other such architectural uses.

Flexible electret transducer assembly, speaker, and method for fabricating flexible electret transducer assembly

A flexible electret transducer assembly including an electrical backplate and a membrane made of an electret material is disclosed. A plurality of spacers is formed on a surface of the electrical backplate in a longitudinal or latitudinal direction, and the spacers are used for supporting a vibrating room of the membrane. A working area of the membrane is formed between adjacent spacers, and in each of the working area, the space between the electrical backplate and the membrane is smaller than that in a conventional electrostatic speaker. The spacers between the electrical backplate and the membrane are mass produced through a stamping process. Thereby, an accurate space between the electrical backplate and the membrane can be maintained and accordingly the audio quality can be improved. In addition, a speaker including the flexible electret transducer assembly and a method for fabricating the flexible electret transducer assembly are also disclosed.

Structure and manufactruring method of electrostatic speaker

A structure of an electrostatic speaker and a manufacturing method thereof are provided. In the electrostatic speaker, an electrode and a vibrating film are disposed closely, and electrostatic force of the vibrating film may make the vibrating film contacting with the electrode such that the speaker would fail to generate the sound. Thus, the invention provides a spacer structure and a manufacturing method thereof. Various patterning or height changes and other designed are performed to place the spacer between the electrode and the vibrating film, so as to prevent the electrode from contacting with the vibrating film. The disposition of the spacer is expected to enhance frequency response or sound volume of the speaker.

Invertedly driven electrostatic speaker

An electrostatic speaker system is provided wherein a multitude of speakers are provided in the system, each speaker having a thin electrically conductive film membrane sandwiched between a pair of stator plates. The film membrane is directly coupled to a high voltage AC audio signal emanating from a power amplifier for reproducing an audio signal. The high voltage AC audio signal is not applied to the stator plates but instead indirectly coupled to the pair of stators by a plurality of condensers (in a voltage multiplier circuit) of a electrical circuit contained within each speaker of the system. By applying the high voltage AC audio signal to the film membrane, approximately one-quarter of the voltage typically used to drive an electrostatic speaker is required.

Electrostatic speaker

An electrostatic speaker is constituted of a vibrator held between opposite electrodes via spacers. The vibrator has a plurality of surface projections and a plurality of backside projections, which project in opposite directions. When voltage differences occur between the opposite electrodes due to audio signals, electrostatic force is exerted on the vibrator, which thus vibrates in response to audio signals with a high sensitivity. The vibrator 10 generates sound in response to vibration parameters such as vibration frequency, amplitude, and phase. The sound propagates through at least one of the opposite electrodes having small holes and is thus emitted to the external space. Thus, it is possible to precisely reproduce sound with a high sensitivity to audio signals and without causing distortions in reproduction waves.
