Display interface to a computer controlled display system with variable comprehensiveness levels of menu items dependent upon size of variable display screen available for menu item display

InactiveUS7263668B1Maximize amount of timeHigh level of comprehensivenessProgram controlMemory systemsDisplay deviceHuman–computer interaction
A display interface system for computer controlled displays including a window in a display screen, for the display of visible data; a set of selectable items in the portion of said display screen; an implementation for varying the area of the display screen portion; and for varying the comprehensiveness level of the items in response to the varying area of the display screen portion. It is often the case that the area in a window needs to be reduced for any of a variety of purposes. In such a situation, the items in the menu are maintained at a high level of comprehensiveness, e.g. icon plus explanatory text, while its window area is greatest. Then, as the window area is reduced, the levels of comprehensiveness of the items in the menu or set are also reduced since the space can no longer accommodate them.

Algorithm for backup PE selection

A fast reroute (FRR) technique is implemented at the edge of a computer network. If an edge device detects a node or link failure that prevents it from communicating with a neighboring routing domain, the edge device reroutes at least some data packets addressed to that domain to a backup edge device which, in turn, forwards the packets to the neighboring domain. The backup edge device is not permitted to reroute the packets a second time. According to the inventive technique, the edge device first identifies a group one or more possible backup edge devices and then selects at least one preferred backup edge device from the group. The edge device makes its selection based on the values of one or more metrics associated with the possible backup edge devices. The metrics are input to a novel selection algorithm that selects the preferred backup edge device(s) using a hierarchical selection process or a weighted-metric selection process, or some combination thereof.

Deduplication of Data on Disk Devices Based on a Threshold Number of Sequential Blocks

Deduplication of data on disk devices based on a threshold number (THN) of sequential blocks is described herein, the threshold number being two or greater. Deduplication may be performed when a series of THN or more received blocks (THN series) match a sequence of THN or more stored blocks (THN sequence), whereby a sequence comprises blocks stored on the same track of a disk device. Deduplication may be performed using a block-comparison mechanism comprising metadata entries of stored blocks and a mapping mechanism containing mappings of deduplicated blocks to their matching blocks. The mapping mechanism may be used to perform later read requests received for the deduplicated blocks. The deduplication described herein may reduce the read latency as the number of seeks between tracks may be reduced. Also, when a seek to a different track is performed, the seek time cost is spread over THN or more blocks.

Optimizing compilation of pointer variables in the presence of indirect function calls

InactiveUS6173444B1Eliminate redundant definitionReduce universal data setSoftware engineeringSpecific program execution arrangementsCompilerPointer aliasing
Effective use of optimizing techniques during compilation is difficult in programs that make liberal use of pointers or indirect function calls. The indirection often means that the compiler cannot precisely determine the set of objects pointed to by a pointer at a specific location in the program, and therefore cannot efficiently eliminate pointer redundancies in the code. The present invention provides an optimising method that reduces the size of alias sets associated with program pointers. During an initial compilation phase, intraprocedural information about pointer variables referenced in each function of the program is gathered and saved in a data structure called the pointer alias graph. In the middle phase, the pointer alias graphs from all the compilation units for the program are combined to form a universal pointer alias graph and then transitive closure is performed on the universal pointer alias graph to produce a reduced graph containing the list of objects that each pointer variable can point to. In the final phase, all the files are re-compiled using the universal pointer alias graph as input, resolving all occurrences where pointer variables are de-referenced.

Object oriented dispatch optimization

An object oriented dispatch optimization method determines statically which body of code will be executed when a method is dispatched. The program code is examined to identify all procedure bodies that can be invoked for a given class and a given method. An identified procedure body is analyzed to determine whether a method invocation on a pointer can invoke only one procedure body. Based on this analysis, either the procedure body or the invocation mechanism is changed so a unique procedure is directly called without a test or dispatch being used.

Filter based longest prefix match algorithm

Methods directed to longest prefix matching and systems directed to IP address lookups are presented. The methods and systems relate in particular to IPv6 and comprise finding the longest prefix match (LPM) for an IP address. The method of the invention results in the use of filters to perform LPM. In embodiments of the invention, partial address filtering is used to further reduce filtering requirements. Reducing the number of filtering operations has the advantage of making the LPM algorithm faster and less costly to implement than prior art approaches. Also described is an “ideal offset filter” that extracts a fixed sized sliding window of bits from the IP address being processed.
