Apparatus and method for aggregate indexes

An aggregate index is used for accessing an aggregate value associated with one or more rows of a database table. The aggregate values are stored in the index entries of the index, thus allowing determination of aggregate values without accessing the underlying database table. The aggregate index is created by determining an aggregate value associated with an index entry, and storing the aggregate value with the index entry. The aggregate value is determined by accessing information corresponding to the index entry and processing the information. In the case of an index entry in the form of a branch node, the information might be aggregate values from other nodes, or values of items in the database pointed to by the index entries that are leaf nodes. The aggregate values may be stored in index entries of any type of index.

Apparatus and methods for concept-centric information extraction

Disclosed are methods and apparatus for extracting (or annotating) structured information from web content. Web content of interest from a particular domain is represented as one or more tree instances having a plurality of branching nodes that each correspond to a web object such that the tree instances correspond to one or more structured data instances. Method for the efficient reading of a population of radio frequency identification tags with unique identification numbers over a noisy air channel

A method for reading and tracking radio frequency identification (RFID) tags in the presence of a noisy air channel is provided. In accordance with the method, a binary tree data structure is used to characterize a plurality of RFID tags, each of which is associated with a unique identification (ID) number. During communication between a tag reader and one or more RFID tags, the tag reader traverses the binary tree, eliminating tags from communication until one tag with a unique ID number is isolated and verified. As the binary tree is traversed, counters associated with each node in the tree are incremented based on tag matches, such that, over time, counters associated with nodes in tag-populated branches will tend to have a high value and counters associated with nodes in unpopulated tree branches will tend to have low values. Where the read process is subject to noise and the tag reader is forced make a decision at a branching node, the tag reader makes a branch prediction based on the current value of the node counters associated with each of the possible alternative branches.

Optimized protection coordination of electronic-trip circuit breaker by short circuit current availability monitoring

Centralized coordination of setting and adjusting trip settings of electronic circuit breakers in an electrical distribution system by monitoring short circuit current availability (SCCA) and adjusting trip settings based on received SCCA estimates from SCCA monitoring devices installed at main, feeder, and branch nodes of the distribution system. The SCCA monitoring devices are capable of automatically estimating the SCCA in the circuit or node at which the SCCA device is installed and transmitting SCCA estimates to a controller, which uses the SCCA estimates to coordinate adjustments to trip settings for the various circuit breakers. Depending on the node position of the circuit breaker and the corresponding SCCA at that node, the controller adjusts in real-time the short-circuit trip settings for the circuit breakers so that they are below the SCCA value. Optional user-inputted settings can affect the trip setting adjustments, such as transient loading conditions that can influence the SCCA estimates.

Forward-only evaluation for XPATH inverse query processing

An inverse query engine that uses an instruction tree to represents the queries to be applied against input, instead of applying each query individually. Each node in the instruction tree represents executable code. Each branch of the instruction tree when executed from the root node to a terminating branch node represents the instructions to be executed to process that query against the input. The instruction tree is forward-only in that once a node in a tree is processed against an input, that executable code associated with that node is not ever processed again for that node. Accordingly, processing resources and time is conserved.

Decision tree induction that is sensitive to attribute computational complexity

A decision tree for classifying computer files is constructed. Computational complexities of a set of candidate attributes are determined. A set of attribute vectors are created for a set of training files with known classification. A node is created to represent the set. A weighted impurity reduction score is calculated for each candidate attribute based on the computational complexity of the attribute. If a stopping criterion is satisfied then the node is set as a leaf node. Otherwise the node is set as a branch node and the attribute with the highest weighted impurity reduction score is selected as the splitting attribute for the branch node. The set of attribute vectors are split into subsets based on their attribute values of the splitting attribute. The above process is repeated for each subset. The tree is then pruned based on the computational complexities of the splitting attributes.
