Passive metamaterials-based acoustic sound suppression modules for servers

The technology described herein is directed towards one or more modular metasurfaces arranged with unit cells for sound absorption, in which the unit cells are based on Helmholtz resonators that are deployed proximate to a server, without substantially obstructing airflow from the server fan(s). Each sound absorbing unit-cells is designed and constructed based on a specific resonance frequency, and includes a neck portion and air chamber dimensioned to resonate at the desired resonance frequency and thereby inverse phase cancel corresponding narrowband frequencies of incoming sound waves. The metasurfaces can be arranged in a modular frame structure of surrounding unit cells, positioned behind the server's fan(s), with an opening in the frame structure to facilitate airflow therethrough, without obstructing or substantially obstructing the airflow to the surrounding environment.

The technology described herein is directed towards modular metasurfaces arranged with unit cells for narrowband, wideband and / or multiband sound absorption, in which the unit cells are based on Helmholtz resonators that are deployed in a server rack, proximate to a server, without substantially obstructing airflow from the server fan(s). Each sound absorbing unit-cells is designed and constructed based on a specific resonance frequency, and includes a neck portion and air chamber dimensioned to resonate at the desired resonance frequency and thereby inverse phase cancel corresponding narrowband frequencies of incoming sound waves. Differently-dimensioned unit cells can be built into a single metasurface module, thereby facilitating wideband and / or multiband sound absorption with that metasurface. The modular metasurfaces can be attached to the sidewalls of a server rack, or positioned in otherwise empty slots above and below a server, optionally coupled to blanking panels for covering the openings of those slots.

Heat removal systems and methods with automated fire suppression for data centers

In an open-loop heat removal system for a building such as a data center or a home, cool air is supplied to the building by a chilling unit and hot air is expelled from the building without recycling, recirculating, or re-cooling the hot air. For fire suppression, the system receives temperature reading(s) from temperature sensor(s) and determines whether any temperature reading reaches or exceeds a temperature that indicates presence of a fire. If so, a louver positioned over an inlet module is automatically or programmatically closed, shutting off air supply to the building. The system determines whether the building is under a negative pressure internally. If not, an exhaust fan at the outlet of the building is turned on to create a negative pressure internally. The system determines whether an oxygen level of the building indicates that the fire has been contained. If not, a sprinkler system is activated.
