Problems solved by technology

[0010] However, in this case, the maximum value allowed for the outer diameter of the lens, for example, in the case of a general single-mode optical fiber, the outer diameter is 125 μm, and the lens diameter is limited by the above-mentioned outer diameter.
Like this, in the past technology, the size of the lens is not limited, and it is difficult to improve the mounting accuracy

Embodiment Construction

[0019] Embodiments of the present invention will be specifically described below according to the accompanying drawings. In the following description and drawings, constituent elements having substantially the same function and configuration are given the same reference numerals, and repeated descriptions are omitted.

[0020] FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing the structure of a lens element according to a first embodiment of the present invention. The lens element 1 is composed of an optical substrate, mounted on a support substrate having a mounting groove for mounting an optical element, and assembled into an optical module.

[0021] The lens element 1 is mainly composed of a lens portion 2 , a protrusion portion 4 a , a protrusion portion 4 b , and a manipulation portion 6 .

[0022] As shown in FIG. 1, the lens portion 2 is located near the middle of a substantially rectangular parallelepiped manipulation portion 6 extending in the left-right direction. Moreover, in ...

Abstract

An optical element 1 comprises an optical substrate having a lens 2, projections 4a and 4b, and a handle 6. The lens 2 is provided to the roughly rectangular handle 6 at a predetermined position thereon, while the projections 4a and 4b are provided to the handle 6 at the respective positions separate from the lens 2 by a predetermined distance and each have a semi-cylindrical shape that extends from a bottom of the handle 6. An overall size of an arc shape of each of the projections 4a and 4b is equal to an overall size of an optical fiber with which the optical element 1 is to be coupled optically. When mounting the optical element 1 on a support substrate having a mounting groove therein, the projections 4a and 4b butt against the mounting groove, thereby positioning the optical element 1 in a direction perpendicular to an optical axis.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to an optical element suitable for optical communication equipment, an optical module with the optical element, and a method for installing the optical element on the optical module. Background technique [0002] In the field of optical communication, for example, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 07-199006 and Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 11-295561 disclose optical elements such as microlenses coupled to laser diodes and optical fibers. [0003] Among the former, a technique of optically coupling a laser diode and an optical fiber by using a spherical lens is proposed. Among the latter, a technique of optically coupling a laser diode and an optical fiber using an aspherical lens having a cylindrical outer peripheral portion has been proposed. [0004] In addition, as another prior art, there has been proposed a technique of manufacturing optical elements such as lenses in the above-mentioned field by using a photolithog...
