Embodiment Construction

[0014] A multilayer powdered metal plain bearing or bushing (the entire bearing) according to the invention is generally designated 10 in FIG. 1 , and comprises a steel backing 12 coated with a A multilayer sintered powder metal liner 14 consisting of at least a base layer 16 and an outer surface layer 18, both of which are copper-based sintered powder metal alloys but having different compositions and / or different properties, both The combination of these forms a composite lining 14 that meets the performance requirements of the bearing lining 14.

[0015] In accordance with the present invention, surface layer 18 may be a first copper-based powder metal alloy composition having properties suitable for sliding engagement with a shaft, pin, or other component supported by bearing 10 for sliding along the surface layer 18 rotational plane. A powder metal composition having the desired properties of the surface layer 18 is relatively expensive due to the necessary alloying addit...

Abstract

A method of fabricating multi-layer bronze bearings includes laying down a first layer of copper-based powder metal material of a first composition onto a steel backing strip. At least a second layer of copper-based powder metal material of a second composition different than that of the first is laid down on the first layer, without significantly densifying the first layer. The layers are then sintered, cooled, and roll compacted to bond them to one another and to the backing, after which the layers are further sintered.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to steel backed bronze powder metal engine bearings. Background technique [0002] In the manufacture of copper-based engine bearings and bushings (entire bearings), a common method for bonding copper-based functional layers to steel backing tapes is to apply a single layer of bronze bearing material to the moving liner, sinter, and cool , rolling compaction, and post-sintering. Electroplating or physical vapor deposition is often used to coat this sintered bronze bearing layer with a covering layer, such as tin or lead-tin-copper layer, so that the bearing has good adaptability and press-fit performance. Another method of incorporating a bronze functional layer is to cast such a layer from a molten bath onto a moving steel backing belt and then apply a cover layer over this cast functional layer using a separate electroplating or physical vapor deposition process. Layer, to improve bearing adaptability and press-fit....
