Embodiment 1

[0054] AQUANIN is a microparticle produced by Walcom Bio-Chemical in Shanghai, China, 30% of which is composed of cysteamine hydrochloride as an active ingredient for livestock applications. Example 1 describes the effect of AQUANIN on juvenile shrimp (Penaeus vannamei), especially the effect of different doses of AQUANIN on the growth of juvenile shrimp.

[0055] Juvenile shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) used in this example had an average body weight of 0.43-0.49 g. The juvenile shrimp were fed with standard shrimp feed provided by HengXing Company, Zhanjiang, Guangdong, China. The shrimp feed consisted of the following products listed in Table 1.

[0056] Table 1 - Shrimp Feed

[0057] The pilot experiment of Example 1 was carried out for 42 days. A total of 30 juvenile shrimp with an average body weight of 0.43-0.49 g were randomly divided into 4 groups (G1, G2, G3 and the control group), each group contained 3 replicates, and each replicate used a fish pond (size: 0....

Abstract

The subject invention provides methods for improving shellfish health. In specific embodiments, the invention provides methods for accelerating and / or augmenting shellfish growth; improving immunity; and enhancing fertility in shellfish. To do so, the present invention provides materials and methods for administering a cysteamine compound to shellfish.

Description

Background technique [0001] The world's population is growing rapidly with a simultaneous increase in demand for seafood. Moreover, the beneficial properties of marine foods demonstrated by recent studies have increased this need (see Takezaki, T. et al., "Diet and lung cancer risk from a 14-year population-based prospective study in Japan: with special reference to fish consumption," Nutr Cancer, 45(2):160-7 (2003); and Su, X. et al., "Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid contentin different edible portions of commercial scallop," Asia Pac J Clin Nutr., 12 Suppl: S63 (2003)). Various methods have been developed to bridge the gap between the supply and demand of marine food. For example, many different shellfish species are currently introduced into aquaculture. Some species are cultivated throughout their life cycle while others are cultivated from wild harvested seeds. Still others are grown in hatcheries and released into open water for later harvest.
