Problems solved by technology

Another problem is that multi-channel low-flow rate cooling systems require a central return channel
There is also the issue that low flow rate coolant pumps may introduce small amounts of air which can prevent the cooling system from functioning properly, causing thermal stress or failure of the components that will be cooled by the system

[0023] Detailed Description of Preferred Embodiments

[0024] Referring now to the drawings, FIGS. 2-4 depict various constructional and functional aspects of a low flow rate coolant system incorporating an air separator according to the present invention, the system being suitable for use in a motor vehicle.

[0025] Referring first to FIG. 2, the low flow rate cooling system 100 includes coolant conduits 102, 102' through which liquid coolant C (as shown in FIGS. 3A and 3B) flows through a main heat exchanger 104, where the heat and Atmosphere is exchanged and flows through conduit 102 to various electronic devices 106a (these electronic devices 106a may be connected in series, parallel, or series-parallel to each other), or through one or more second low flow rate coolant loops 100' The conduit 102' flows to other electronic devices 106b. At the electronic devices 106a, 106b, the heat they generate is absorbed and removed by the coolant flowing therethrough. The coolant f...

Abstract

An air separator for low flow rate coolant systems that removes air from liquid coolant. An air separator is a sealed tank having a bottom wall, a top wall relatively high in the direction of gravity, and side walls sealed therebetween. The coolant inlet is on the side wall, the pump outlet is on the bottom wall, and the coolant container outlet is on the top wall. The outlet of the coolant container is connected to the coolant container which is at a higher position in the direction of gravity relative to the tank. The cross-sectional area per unit length of the tank relative to the piping system is such that the residence time of the coolant in the tank encourages the movement of coolant bubbles towards the coolant container.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a low flow rate cooling system of the type used for cooling electronic devices in motor vehicles, such as those associated with hybrid motor vehicles and fuel cells. More particularly, the present invention relates to an air separator for a low flow rate cooling system for removing air bubbles from a coolant liquid. Background of the invention [0002] As shown in FIG. 1 , the low flow rate cooling system 10 includes coolant conduits 12 whereby liquid coolant flows through a main heat exchanger and where heat in the coolant is exchanged with air, and thereby heat is transferred from a variety of Heat is absorbed in the electronic devices 16a and 16b, where the electronic devices 16a and 16b may be interconnected in series, parallel, or series-parallel. The coolant flows through a coolant container (or surge tank) 18 with a removable lid 20 where it fills and air is able to escape. The pump 22 (combined, only the elect...
