Embodiment Construction

[0013] Comprising handle and extension head, shown generally at 10 when partially or fully housed in a tooth cleaning device body / housing figure 1 The device is designed for cleaning teeth and will be described in the context of this particular application. However, the principles of the device can be effectively used in other applications discussed below. The device generally combines a foam generator 14 with a piezoelectric transducer 16 and associated piezoelectric transducer drive electronics 18 called drive electronics.

[0014] The device 10 includes a nozzle / standoff member 12 designed to be positioned against the tooth, particularly the interproximal region, to provide the desired spacing between the piezoelectric transducer 16 that produces the ultrasonic frequency range and the tooth. In order to specifically maintain the tooth at or near the focal point of the transducer. For example, at a center frequency of 400 kHz for an ultrasound signal, the focal length is 6...

Abstract

The apparatus includes a source of gas (air) bubbles (14) in a liquid medium, the gas bubbles having a size range which is associated with the size of bacteria alone or in colonies, on teeth or other surfaces. A source of ultrasound signals (16, 18) has a range of frequencies between 200 kHz and 2MHz, the ultrasound frequency range including the resonance frequencies of a majority of the bubbles. The application of the ultrasound to the bubble/liquid stream directed toward the biofilm on the teeth results in a dislodging/removal of the biofilm.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to apparatus for cleaning teeth using ultrasound, and in particular to the combination of a foam generator and an ultrasound source that vibrates the foam at or near its resonant frequency. Background technique [0002] A gas bubble in a liquid, such as water, causes a forceful fluid flow when the foam vibrates with an ultrasonic frequency at or near the resonant frequency of the foam. Such fluid flow directed towards the teeth has the effect of disrupting and removing plaque from the teeth. Such a system is the subject matter of co-pending PCT Patent Application No. PCT / IB2006 / 054463, the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference, owned by the assignee of the present invention. However such devices use a single ultrasound frequency. Foam generation for such systems must be correspondingly precise so that the foam has a radius that matches the frequency of the ultrasonic signal for maximum effectiv...
