Problems solved by technology

However, until now, no device has been realized that employs both cutting and infusion techniques, wherein the cutting tool, such as a blade, is also hidden while the cannula is being inserted into the prescribed position, thereby allowing the device to be delivered safely to Desired treatment area without causing damage to the inner lining of the arterial wall during delivery

Embodiment Construction

[0233] In these figures is shown a cannula-based device according to the invention for the treatment of internal body cavities such as arteries / veins or other hollow organs. Also shown is an improved sheath and sheath loading device according to the invention. Although figure 1 -9 and 21-23 show the device with the tool as a needle, but it is to be understood that the devices and sheaths described can also be used with optional tools such as one or more blades such as shown with reference to other figures Use with those tools as described.

[0234] figure 1 A cannula-based drug delivery device 1 according to one embodiment of the invention is shown. The device can be inserted into the vasculature via a guide wire (e.g. figure 2 ), the device comprises a microneedle 2 having two positions, a retracted position and an extended position. These needles are mounted on the surface of the balloon cannula 4 and connected by flexible tubing 6 to a multi-lumen supply hose 8 . T...

Abstract

A collapsible treatment implement guard for a device for treating a target area of a vessel wall of a vessel within a human or animal body, the device comprising: an expandable portion for radially expanding the device from a contracted configuration allowing travel within the vessel to the target area to an expanded configuration allowing treatment of the target area; and at least one treatment implement extending radially outwardly from the expandable portion, wherein in the device's contracted configuration the implement is at least partially shielded by the guard, and in its expanded configuration the guard collapses to expose the implement for contact with the target area of the vessel wall; the guard being arranged to expel fluid from the device under the collapsing action of the guard. A protective sheath for fitting to a device for treating a target area of a vessel wall of a vessel within a human or animal body, a device for treating a target area of a vessel wall of a vessel within a human or animal body, and a method of treating one or more target areas of a vessel wall within a human or animal body are also disclosed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to medical devices. In particular, the present invention relates to catheter-based medical devices for treating internal body cavities such as arteries / veins or other hollow organs. Background technique [0002] Diseases of the circulatory system are currently the leading cause of human death in the world, and the number of young patients suffering from the disease is increasing. In addition, there is an emerging trend in the global society that people are exposed to a greater degree to an increasing number of factors related to cardiovascular disease. [0003] For example, a recent national Irish newspaper front page article "Tipping the scales: Childobestiy levels triple" (The Irish Examiner 22 / 11 / 04) drew public attention to the rate at which obesity is increasing in Irish society. Additionally, statistics on causes of death show the true extent of the problem, with 40% of all deaths in Ireland being caused by disease...
