Problems solved by technology

Lubricant additive chemistry can be used to provide protection under boundary lubrication conditions, but these additives sometimes adversely affect other performance characteristics
For example, lubricants can provide a range of surface fatigue protection, e.g. against formation of ridges, waves, blocks, etc., but have detrimental effects on other types of surface fatigue such as pitting

Embodiment Construction

[0051] The lubricating compositions of the present invention include a multicomponent phosphorus antiwear system. The antiwear system is more fully described in Scheme I below. Reaction Scheme I Compound A

[0052] The phosphorus antiwear system of the present invention comprises a first phosphorus compound A. Compound A is the reaction product prepared by first reacting O,O-dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphoric acid 1 with epoxide 2 to give intermediate compound 3. Intermediate compound 3 is further reacted with phosphorus pentoxide 4 to provide intermediate compound 5. Amination of intermediate compound 5 with amine 6 affords the final reaction product 7 or A.

[0053] Suitable epoxides 2 for the synthesis of Compound A include, but are not limited to, ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, styrene oxide, α-methylstyrene oxide, etc., but R 3 , R 4 , R 5 , and R 6 can independently be hydrogen or any C 1 -C 30 hydrocarbyl group.

Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a lubricant composition comprising a first phosphorus compound, a second phosphorus compound, and a third phosphorus compound, wherein the first phosphorus compound is present in the lubricant composition in an amount to provide between about 120 and 350 ppm phosphorus. The lubricant composition may provide robust anti-wear and reduced pitting.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to lubricant additives and compositions thereof that can be used in lubricating fluids to provide robust antiwear properties without sacrificing antipitting performance. The present disclosure also relates to lubricant additives and the preparation of concentrates comprising said lubricant additives, and devices lubricated with lubricating fluids comprising said lubricant additives. Background technique [0002] Lubricating compositions are used to prevent damage to machinery under operating conditions. In particular, under boundary lubrication conditions, the lubricant must function to minimize detrimental metal-to-metal contact. Lubricant additive chemistry can be used to provide protection under boundary lubrication conditions, but these additives sometimes adversely affect other performance characteristics. For example, lubricants can provide a range of surface fatigue protection, eg, protection against formation of...
