Generally, a solar cell having a low-voltage output is provided at an important position on the exterior of a vehicle. The solar cell is electrically connected to a DC / DC boost converter that boosts the voltage output by the solar cell to a level close to that charged by the high-voltage battery. The high voltage bus electrically connects the DC / DC boost converter and the high voltage battery.

Abstract

According to the invention there is provided a vehicle comprising a traction battery and a solar panel array. The vehicle may also include circuitry to electrically connect the battery to the array. The circuitry may include circuitry of at least one switch, wherein the at least one switch is configured to close when driven by a calibrated maximum sustaining power to allow energy to flow from the array to the battery. An advantage of the present invention is the ability to draw power from a solar panel array thereby reducing the costs associated with the energy source.
