Any analyte that is a light absorber can be detected in solid tissue, but the methods and systems of the invention are particularly useful for detecting the presence and location of micrometastases in lymph nodes. The method and system of the present invention can, for example, replace or assist conventional sentinel lymph node biopsy to detect the presence or absence of micrometastases in extracted sentinel lymph nodes and precisely determine their location in three-dimensional space.
