Problems solved by technology

One limitation of this method is that the starting material is restricted to consist only of epsom salts and rock salts (many naturally occurring starting materials consist of several of the above different types of salts)
Another limitation is that the temperature and pressure applied to the hydrate condensation and crystallization must be controlled to obtain a suitable magnesium sulfate hydrate salt

Embodiment 1

[0093] In a first example, 163 gallons of a 24% by weight magnesium chloride solution were pumped into a 300 gallon jacketed mixing kettle. The solution was mixed using an axial impeller at a rate of 2500 gallons per minute (gpm) and heated to 135°F (57°C) with low pressure steam through the kettle jacket. Then 765 pounds (Lbs) of salt mixture were added to the mixing tank to produce a first slurry. The kettle was mixed for 18 minutes while maintaining a temperature of 122°F (50°C). At the completion of the residence time, the slurry was pumped to a Baker Perkins Model S-8 horizontal piston pusher centrifuge. This centrifuge basket has a 13 / 10 inch screen opening and runs at 1800 revolutions per minute (RPM). The first slurry contained 39% by weight suspended solids. The first solid comprising sodium chloride is separated from the first slurry to produce a second slurry. The second slurry continued into a second jacketed mixing tank (surge tank) of the same design as the m...

Embodiment 2

[0102] In a second example, 173 gallons of a 26% by weight magnesium chloride solution were pumped into a 300 gallon jacketed mixing kettle. The solution was mixed using an axial impeller at a rate of 2500 gallons per minute (gpm) and heated to 135°F (57°C) with low pressure steam through the kettle jacket. 739 pounds (Lbs) of salt mixture were then added to the mixing tank to produce a first slurry. The kettle was mixed for 22 minutes while maintaining a temperature of 123°F (51°C). At the completion of the residence time, the slurry was pumped to a Baker Perkins Model S-8 horizontal piston pusher centrifuge. This centrifuge basket has a 13 / 10 inch screen opening and runs at 1800 revolutions per minute (RPM). The first slurry contained 35% by weight suspended solids. The first solid comprising sodium chloride is separated from the first slurry to produce a second slurry. The second slurry continued into a second jacketed mixing tank (surge tank) of the same design as the ...

Abstract

In one embodiment, a method for producing a naturally purified salt product such as magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, wherein the salt mixture is treated with a solution comprising magnesium chloride; the first slurry is separated to provide a second slurry, which is further separated to yield a first liquid stream; the first liquid stream is crystallized to provide the naturally purified salt product. In another embodiment, a high purity salt product is produced. In another embodiment, other products that are produced include naturally purified sodium chloride and magnesium chloride.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 61 / 182,342, filed May 29, 2009, entitled "Method of Producing Naturally Purified Salt Products," which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention is primarily concerned with the production of naturally purified salt products such as magnesium sulfate heptahydrate from mixtures of various salts. Aspects of the invention relate in particular to the production of high purity salt products. The invention also relates to the recovery of other salts, including sodium chloride and magnesium chloride, from the process. The method utilizes natural compounds, such as those produced from seawater, as starting materials and throughout the process. Background technique [0004] Salt production methods seek to maximize the various commercial products recoverable from salt mixtures, but are l...
