Embodiment 1
[0073] To prepare the high modulus fibers of the present invention, 60 filament bundles were gel spun and assembled. The denier of the 60 filament bundle is 650 (10.83 dpf). The 60 monofilament tow was then subjected to a first drawing step, a single-pass double drawing process according to the method described in Example 1 of U.S. Patent 7,344,668, thereby reducing the denier of the tow to 215 (3.58 dpf) . The 60 monofilament tow was then subjected to a second drawing step, another single-pass double drawing process according to the method described in Example 1 of U.S. Patent 7,344,668, thereby reducing the denier of the tow to 163 (2.71 dpf).
Embodiment 2
[0075] The procedure of Example 1 was repeated to assemble a bundle comprising 480 individual filaments and having a denier of 1300 (2.71 dpf). This bundle is indicated in Table 1 as "HMF fibers". The tenacity of the formed fibers was 39 g / denier and the tensile modulus was 1449 g / denier.
Embodiment 3 and 4
[0076] Embodiment 3 and 4 (comparative example) and embodiment 5
[0077] Ballistic shooting bags were prepared from three different types of high modulus polyethylene fibers, denoted in Table 1 as "Standard Fiber", "PLUS Fiber" and "HMF Fiber" for testing the ballistic performance of each fabric type. Standard fibers are high tenacity multifilament polyethylene fibers with a tenacity of 34.3 and drawn to a denier / filament of 5.4. PLUS fibers are high tenacity multifilament polyethylene fibers with a tenacity of 36 and drawn to a denier of 4.6 per filament. Both Standard fiber and PLUS fiber were supplied by Honeywell International Inc., Morristown, NJ. HMF fiber is the high-tenacity multifilament polyethylene fiber obtained in Example 2 of the present invention. Table 1 lists the measured properties for all three fiber types. A comparison of each property listed for each fiber type is shown.
