Problems solved by technology

However, the success rate of systemic delivery options is limited
[0006] Systemic delivery of drugs is inherently limited because constant drug delivery to the affected area is difficult to achieve, and drugs applied systemically often cycle through concentration peaks and troughs, resulting in time periods of potency and ineffectiveness

Embodiment Construction

[0063] The present invention relates to a delivery system for delivering a stent to a vessel bifurcation having a main branch and a side branch, and is generally configured to at least partially cover a portion of the side branch as well as a portion of the main branch. However, no limitation is meant, and those skilled in the art will appreciate that the devices and methods disclosed herein may be used to treat other areas of the body.

[0064] Academia is slowly moving away from the main-branch vs. side-branch model and terminology. It is now generally accepted that the "mother" vessel divides into two "daughter vessels", that is, the two vessels anatomically behind the carina. Vessels that appear to be continuations of a parent vessel generally have less angularity. Other vessels are usually smaller in diameter and may collectively be referred to as side branches or sub-vessels. Therefore, in this specification, the terms "main branch" or "trunk" or "mother vessel" are us...

Abstract

A system for treating a bifurcation includes first and second delivery catheters, each having an expandable member. A stent having a side hole is disposed on the second delivery catheter. A portion of the first delivery catheter is disposed under a portion of the stent. The first delivery catheter is slidable relative to the second delivery catheter, and the first delivery catheter passes through the side hole. Expansion of the first expandable member expands a proximal portion of the stent in a main branch vessel, and expansion of the second expandable member expands a distal portion of the stent in a side branch vessel.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The present invention relates to medical devices, and more particularly to stent installation and treatment of bifurcated vessels. A stent is an implantable scaffold that is usually delivered percutaneously and deployed within a vein, artery, or other tubular body organ to treat an occlusion, stenosis, aneurysm, collapse, dissection or weakening, lesion, or abnormally enlarged A vessel or vessel wall. The stent expands radially in situ, thereby expanding and / or supporting the vessel wall or body organ wall. Specifically, stents are routinely grafted into the coronary, cardiac, pulmonary, nerve and vascular, peripheral vascular, thoracic, gastrointestinal, and reproductive systems, and have been successfully grafted into the urinary tract, bile ducts, esophagus, tracheobronchial tree, and brain to Strengthen these body organs. [0002] Stents are commonly used to improve angioplasty by preventing elastic recoil and remodeling of the vessel ...
