example 1
[0078] A modified (described below) inkjet printer (obtained under the trade designation "HP DESKJET948C" from Hewlett Packard, Palo Alto, CA) was used to transfer weakly bonded crystalline graphite to the substrate. Inkjet printers use dry ink cartridges (that is, the cartridges do not contain any ink). Weakly bonded crystalline graphite (Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite Crystals available from SPI Supplies, Inc., West Chester, PA) was bonded using a binder (available from 3M Company under the trade designation "SCOTCH-WELD INSTANTADHESIVE CA100"). 10 mm x 10 mm x 1 mm sample) was attached to the print head of the ink cartridge. The substrate was a 0.1 mm thick A4 size transparent film (obtained under the trade designation "PVC7204" from LAVVisual Products, Singapore) which was placed in the paper slot of the printing press. When the substrate is drawn into the printing zone by the rollers, the weakly bonded crystalline graphite and the substrate are drawn against each oth...
example 2
[0080] Example 2 was carried out in the same manner as Example 1, except that, in addition to the print head equipped with weakly bonded crystalline graphite, a second print head was equipped with a paint brush (available under the trade designation "SHUR-LINE PAINT PAD" from Shur-Line of Huntersville, NC (Shur-Line, Huntersville, NC). A paintbrush was attached to the second print head with an adhesive ("SCOTCH-WELDINSTANT ADHESIVE CA100"). A first print head carrying weakly bonded crystalline graphite transfers a thin layer of graphene while in close proximity to the substrate (ie, touching or lightly touching the substrate). During this process, a second print head carrying a squeegee helps thin the graphite and spread the material over otherwise untransferred areas on the substrate. refer to figure 2 , shows a substrate 21 printed with graphene 22 (white area).
