Problems solved by technology

One problem with this configuration is that all molecular ion clusters undergo fragmentation, which can result in a large number of peaks on the spectrum, making analysis very difficult
While splitting may be useful, splitting may increase the total energy used by the IMS

Embodiment Construction

[0018] refer to figure 1 , the detector device comprises an elongated tubular housing 1, the interior of which is substantially at atmospheric pressure. The inlet port 2 towards its left-hand end leads into the ionization region 3 . The sample gas or vapor to be analyzed is supplied to port 2 via filter 4 in a conventional manner. The ionization region 3 comprises a corona discharge point 5 or some other ionization means for ionizing the sample, such as a radioactive source. The ion gate 6 separates the ionization region 3 from the drift chamber 7 which extends to the right-hand end of the housing 1 where a collector plate 8 is installed. The drift chamber 7 includes electrodes 11 to 15 arranged in rows at intervals along the length direction of the drift chamber 7 .

[0019] The collector plate 8, electrodes 11 to 15, gate 6 and discharge point 5 are electrically connected to a processor control unit 20 which provides an output to a display or other utilization unit 21 ind...

Abstract

A detection device including an ionisation region, an ion gate comprising two electrodes, an ion modifier comprising two electrodes, a drift chamber and a collector is provided. The ion gate and the ion modifier are combined so the ion gate is one of the ion modifier electrodes.

Description

technical field [0001] This disclosure relates to testing devices for detecting substances in samples. This disclosure relates more particularly, but not exclusively, to ion mobility spectrometers (IMS). Background technique [0002] Ion mobility spectrometry is used to detect chemical species present in vapors or gases, usually at atmospheric pressure. IMS employ methods to ionize sampled chemicals, such as corona discharge or radioactive sources. A gate is opened to allow molecular ion clusters to enter one end of the drift chamber, and a voltage is applied across the drift chamber to cause the ion clusters to drift to the other end, where they are collected by a collector plate. Molecular ion clusters may also include additional dopant ions. Dopants are introduced to help identify ions of interest. The time required for molecular ion clusters to pass through the gate to the collector plate depends on the number, size, shape and charge of the molecular ion clusters. M...
