The invention relates to a method for informing a driver, comprising the steps of: sensing an image of an external region of a motor vehicle; determining a coherent display area in the image; determining personalized information that is aimed at a driver of the motor vehicle; inserting the information into the image in the region of the display area; and outputting the image to the driver. The invention also relates to a system for informing a driver on board a motor vehicle, comprising a recording apparatus for sensing an image of an external region of the motor vehicle, a determining apparatus for determining personalized information that is aimed at a driver of the motor vehicle, a processing apparatus for determining a coherent display area in the image and for inserting the information into the image in the region of the display, and an output device for outputting the image to the driver.
