Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention allow for a more complete characterization of measurements of the pressure drop across the stenotic lesion and the size of the vessel lumen in the vicinity of the stenotic lesion using sensors delivered intravascularly to the stenotic lesion. In a preferred embodiment, the size (eg, inner diameter, cross-sectional profile) of the vessel lumen in the vicinity of the stenotic lesion can be measured by one or more intravascular ultrasound transducers. In a preferred embodiment, the intravascular ultrasound transducer can be delivered to the site of the stenosed lesion by the same delivery device that carries the pressure transducer.

Background technique [0002] Assessing the severity of the stenotic lesion site is an important part of recommending treatment options. In some cases, if the stenotic lesion is allowed to develop unchecked, the stenotic lesion can lead to an obstruction of blood flow which can cause a variety of very serious problems. Common treatment options such as stenting, angioplasty, etc. are usually recommended to inhibit or reduce growth at the site of the stenotic lesion. Even so, treatment options can have their own adverse consequences.
