However, such methods are not suitable for the development of plates, since undeveloped plates do not contain printed and non-printed areas that can be detected optically
[0009] As a result, it is still difficult to provide an environmentally friendly processing system that consumes a small amount of developer

[0033] Excellent development can be obtained by utilizing a turbulent flow of fresh developer liquid to deposit the developer onto the image recording coating of the plate. The developer liquid is constantly moved at the plate surface during a local development dwell time at a sufficient volumetric flow rate whereby no boundary layer forms on the plate during the development time and travels with the plate, and thus the target area of the nozzle(s) N1 is always in contact with fresh developer liquid. Development occurs in the absence of a developer intensity gradient from the coating surface to the substrate. As a result, the plate does not experience local depletion of developer strength, and the plate is developed quickly and uniformly.

[0034] The developer overflow may be collected in a tank and / or drained into a storage tank without recycling back to the nozzle(s) N1. Alternatively, the developer overflow may be collected and recycled, preferably ...

Abstract

An apparatus and method for processing a lithographic printing plate is disclosed. The apparatus (10) comprises (i) plate transport means (4, 12, 12') for conveying the plate (14) through the apparatus; (ii) plate detection means (8) for locating the plate in the apparatus and for determining the plate width; (iii) one or more nozzle(s) (20) for depositing developer on the plate, wherein said nozzle(s) are arranged to shuttle over the plate or are arranged as a fixed array that spans at least the width of the plate. The plate detection means are coupled to the nozzles by means for selectively actuating the nozzles that are positioned to deposit developer across the plate area, which results in a significant reduction of developer consumption. In preferred embodiments, the nozzles apply developer in accordance with the image on the plate, which enables an even lower consumption of developer.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for developing lithographic printing plates with reduced developer consumption. Background technique [0002] Lithographic printing typically involves the use of so-called printing masters, such as printing plates, mounted on cylinders of a rotary printing press. The master carries a lithographic image on its surface, and a print is obtained by applying ink to the image and subsequently transferring the ink from the master to a receiver material, which is typically paper. In conventional lithography, ink and a water dampening solution (also called dampening liquid) are supplied to the lithographic image, which is composed of oleophilic (or hydrophobic, i.e. accepts ink, repels water) ) area and hydrophilic (or oleophobic, ie accept water, repel ink) area. In so-called offset printing, the lithographic image is made up of areas that accept ink and do not adhere to (repel) ink, and during offset ...
