Abstract

Compositions contain a therapeutically effective amount of cuminaldehyde for at least one of provoking the swallowing reflex of dysphagic patients, decreasing appetite by delaying gastric emptying, reducing body weight gain, or reducing gylcemia by improving insulin sensitivity or improving mood, memory or cognition. Methods are provided that include administering such compositions.

Background technique [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to compositions comprising naturally occurring compounds. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to compositions comprising cuminaldehyde, and also to methods comprising administering such compositions. [0002] Dysphagia is a disease typically represented by decreased ability to swallow. Normal swallowing involves three distinct phases that are related and coordinated: the oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal phases. During the oral stage under voluntary control, chewed food mixed with saliva forms a bolus, which is sent by voluntary tongue movements to the back of the mouth and into the pharynx. The pharyngeal phase is involuntarily controlled and is triggered by a food / liquid bolus passing through the palatal arches into the pharynx.
