The automatic control device comprises water tanks, a main pump, at least one auxiliary pump, a water outlet header pipe, a pressure detecting unit and a control unit, wherein the main pump and the auxiliary pumps are connected with the water tanks; the water outlet header pipe is connected with a pump set composed of the main pump and the auxiliary pumps; the pressure detecting unit is located in the position, at a pump set outlet, of the water outlet header pipe; and the control unit is connected with the pressure detecting unit and controls the auxiliary pumps to be started and stopped. The automatic control method comprises the steps of water pump arranging, pressure detecting and auxiliary pump control. According to the automatic control device and method for the nuclear power plant desalting water pump, flow meters of the water pump water outlet header pipe and flow signal detecting are omitted, so that fault points of a pipe network are decreased; a water pump outlet pressure signal is adopted to control the auxiliary pumps to be started and stopped, so that the water supply interruption risk caused by faults of the flow meters is avoided, and water can be continuously supplied to a nuclear power plant unit; and meanwhile, the auxiliary pump starting and stopping pressure control mode is better matched with a water pump inlet low pressure off-stream protection control mode, thus, integrated control over the system is facilitated, and the water supply safety and economy can be improved under the condition of wide-range fluctuating water supply.
