Embodiment Construction

[0050] now refer to figure 1 , the medical pump 10 may be positioned adjacent to the patient 12 to deliver medication to the patient. As depicted, the medical pump 10 may be a peristaltic infusion pump or a syringe pump or other similar device for delivering medication to a patient under computerized control.

[0051] Each given medical pump 10 may communicate via the Internet 19 with a database of a central medical records system 14 in a medical facility or with an external medical database 17 (eg, managed by a third party). This communication may be by various means including electrical or optical cables, or wireless communication as shown, or a combination of both.

[0052] The central medical records system 14 may, for example, provide a medical records server 16 in communication with the medical pump 10 via a wireless transceiver 18 and with a plurality of data terminals 20 which may be provided by medical personnel through standard network circuits or the like. Abstract

The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for delivery-contemporaneous medicine verification. A device for providing drug verification may work in conjunction with drug delivery devices such as medical pumps to provide a chemical and concentration analysis of drugs being delivered forming a signature that can be compared to a signature associated with the proper drug, reducing errors in medicine delivery and ensuring proper use of medicines throughout their lifecycle.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Application 62 / 280,999, filed January 20, 2016, which is incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to medical systems that can monitor and manage patients and patient treatment, and more particularly to systems for identifying the appropriate drug type and drug formulation while delivering the drug to the patient. Background technique [0004] For example, the delivery of drugs in hospitals or other medical settings is an important but challenging part of medical management. Not only must the correct drug be delivered to the appropriate patient, but the specific formulation of the drug (eg, drug concentration) must be correct. [0005] Some drugs, such as pain relievers, can be subject to abuse and therefore their formulation and delivery must be monitored with special care. Typically, such monitoring includes careful...
