Abstract

The present disclosure relates to an extremum-seeking control system for a chilled water facility, the extremum-seeking control system including a feedback controller and an extremum-seeking controller. The feedback controller is configured to operate equipment of the chilled water plant to achieve a condensate temperature set point. The equipment includes at least one of a refrigerator compressor, a condenser water pump, and a cooling tower fan. The extreme value seeking controller is configured to provide the condensate water temperature setpoint to the feedback controller. The extremum search controller is configured to determine an optimum value for the condensate temperature set point by perturbing the condensate temperature set point with a random excitation signal, monitoring the device for response to the perturbed condensate temperature setting the resulting power consumption, estimating a gradient of the power consumption relative to the condensate temperature setpoint, and adjusting the condensate temperature setpoint so that the estimated gradient tends to zero.
