In general, ESC is a self-optimizing control strategy that can dynamically search for unknown and / or time-varying inputs of the system for optimizing a certain performance index. ESC can be viewed as a dynamic implementation of gradient search by exploiting dither signals. The gradient of the system output y with respect to the system input u can be obtained by slightly perturbing the system operation and applying demodulation measures.
