Embodiment Construction

[0023] Figure 4 An imaging system 402 is shown, such as an ultrasound imaging system. Imaging system 402 includes elongated ultrasound probe 404 and console 406 . Elongate ultrasound probe 404 includes handle 408 , shaft (SHFT) 410 , articulation member 412 and probe head 414 . The handle 408, shaft 410, articulation member 412, and probe head 414 are arranged relative to each other along a longitudinal axis 415 of the elongated ultrasound probe 404, respectively.

[0024] The probe head 414 includes a first end region 416 and a second end region 418 . In the embodiment shown in the figures, the probe head 414 also includes a transducer array 420 . In another embodiment, the probe head 414 may also include a biopsy region. The first end region 416 includes the end of the probe 404 . The second end region 418 is attached to the articulation member 412 . Transducer array 420 includes a one-dimensional or two-dimensional array of transducer elements. Suitable configuration...

Abstract

A probe includes an articulating member having at least two vertebral elements arranged sequentially along a long axis of an elongated ultrasound imaging probe. The articulation member includes a pivot between at least two vertebral members. The pivot is arranged eccentrically relative to the at least two vertebral elements. The pivots are spatially oriented to provide pivot points for different articulation directions of the vertebral shaped elements. The probe also includes a plurality of guides including at least one guide for each of the respective different pivot directions. The probe also includes an actuator having a set of controllers, each controller configured to actuate a different pair of guides of the plurality of guides to control two opposite directions of articulation, wherein the actuator causes Induced stress on at least one of the pushed guide or the unactuated guide is reduced, wherein the stress is induced in response to the actuator pulling the guide.

Description

technical field [0001] The following relates generally to ultrasound (US) imaging and more specifically to articulation line stress relief for ultrasound imaging probes. Background technique [0002] There are at least two different types of ultrasound imaging probes - flexible and rigid. The flexible ultrasound probe includes an articulating portion that is controllably articulated to move the end of the probe head and the transducer array an angle in 1 to 4 planes, for example up to 180 degree. Figures 1A and 1B show an example of a flexible probe 100; namely, a laparoscopic transducer model 8666, a product of BK-Medical ApS, Herlev, Denmark. In FIG. 1A , articulating portion 102 is configured to articulate to either an upper position 104 or a lower position 106 . Joystick 112 controls up / down joint movement. In FIG. 1B , the articulating portion 102 is further configured to articulate to a left position 108 or a right position 110 . Joystick 114 controls left / right j...
