Problems solved by technology

Ultrasound imaging of small breasts and near the chest wall has also proven difficult to perform
For USCT equipment, the mammographic setup only allows transmission and recording through limited angular orientations, which leads to strong artifacts in the obtained ultrasound images if the location and geometry of the abnormality (e.g. tumor) is not known in advance
Also, small air gaps are unavoidable between the compression plate and the breast and cause strong artifacts in ultrasound images
As a result, the quality of diagnoses obtained with these systems is currently poor, and thus none have reached the level of commercial implementation

Embodiment Construction

[0168] In all figures, the same elements are denoted by the same reference numerals.

[0169] figure 1 a) shows a side view of a hand-held medical ultrasound device 10 according to a first embodiment of the invention. The device 10 includes an ultrasound transducer 1 and a reflector 2 . The transducer 1 and the reflector 2 are arranged opposite to each other. The target is arranged between the transducer and the reflector, with reference numeral 4 denoting the tissue of the target to be investigated, ie in this example the female breast. The ultrasound waves emitted by the array of ultrasound transmitters 12 pass through the tissue 4 of the breast, and at least a portion of the ultrasound waves are reflected by the reflector 2 . The transducer 12 also includes an array of ultrasound receivers 13 for receiving reflected ultrasound waves and converting them into electrical signals. like figure 1 As shown, the ultrasound transmitter 12 and receiver 13 may be formed from a ...

Abstract

A hand-held medical ultrasound apparatus (10), in particular for ultrasound computed tomography of the breast, comprises an ultrasound transducer (1), a reflector (2) and an indicator (21, 22, 311, 321, 312) enabling the indication of a relative position and / or orientation between the transducer and the reflector. In a first embodiment, the transducer and the reflector are attached to a mechanicalstructure comprising a first frame (33) and a second frame (34), which allows to adjust the distance (d) between the transducer and the reflector in order to adapt to the shape of the breast. In a second embodiment, the tranducer and the reflector are not mechanically connected and a position and / or orientation sensor is provided to determine a relative position and / or orientation between the transducer and the reflector. In a third embodiment, thin resonant reflector layers are applied to introduce acoustic signatures in the tracked reflector signals. The invention further relates to a method for determining computed tomography.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a handheld medical ultrasonic device and a medical ultrasonic system. Background technique [0002] Tumors and certain other abnormalities in breast tissue are not always detectable in conventional B-mode ultrasound systems. However, these conditions may present high contrast with respect to other ultrasound features such as ultrasound propagation velocity and attenuation. Similar to X-ray computed tomography (CT), ultrasound is transmitted and recorded at multiple angular orientations in order to obtain spatially resolved images of these parameters. Currently, this requires high-end dedicated ultrasound computed tomography (USCT) equipment based on a large number of stationary ultrasound sensors positioned around the breast, see "Breast density measurements withultrasound tomogrtaphy: A comparsion with film and digital mammograoh", Duric et al, Med Phys. 40(1), January 2013; or by mechanically rotating the ultrasound transdu...
