Embodiment Construction

[0019]Hereinafter, various embodiments related to corrosion inhibition in a hydrothermal oxidation (HTO) process are described. As used herein, an HTO process refers to a water oxidation process in which the liquid feed to the reactor comprises at least about 50% by weight water, based on the total weight of the liquid feed, and in the range of about 374°C to about 800°C within a temperature and a pressure in excess of about 25 bar. This combination of water, temperature and pressure is referred to herein as a hydrothermal operating condition. Although various embodiments described herein relate to inhibiting corrosion in HTO processes, the embodiments are not so limited and the concepts are applicable to various hydrothermal systems including non-oxidative hydrothermal processes such as hydrothermal gasification.

[0020] As used herein, a heteroatom refers to an element other than C, H, O, and N that may or may not be bound to a C, H, O, and / or N atom of a feed molecule. I...

Abstract

The disclosure relates to a method of inhibiting corrosion and a method of oxidizing a feed. An embodiment of such a method comprises providing a feed stream comprising a phosphorus-containing material, an alkali metal compound, water, and a corrosion-inhibitor. The embodiment additionally includes introducing the feed stream and oxidant into a reactor chamber and oxidizing the phosphorus-containing material at an oxidation temperature greater than about 374 DEG C. and an oxidation pressure exceeding about 25 bar, wherein the reactor chamber has inner surfaces comprising a material that corrodes when in contact with a phosphorus compound within the reactor. The embodiment additionally includes selectively reacting the corrosion-inhibitor with phosphorus within the reactor, thereby precipitating in the reactor chamber a phosphorus-containing solid inorganic compound. The embodiment further includes forming in the reactor chamber an alkali salt melt and carrying away from the reactor chamber a mixture comprising the solid phosphorus-containing inorganic compound and the alkali salt melt.

Description

technical field [0001] The disclosed technology relates generally to corrosion inhibition in hydrothermal processing, and more particularly to corrosion inhibition in reaction chambers configured for hydrothermal oxidation of corrosive materials such as heteroatom-containing organic wastes. Background technique [0002] Growing public health concerns continue to drive new legislation and regulatory standards aimed at providing a cleaner and safer environment. In particular, the disposal of environmentally hazardous organic waste is a growing environmental challenge, due in part to increasing environmental regulatory standards. For example, many EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) goals call for the destruction of organic waste to a level of 99.9999%. However, treatment processes that meet increasing regulatory standards are often difficult and / or costly to implement. Traditional technologies used to treat organic and toxic waste include adsorption, incineration, and land...
