Abstract

A surface scanner for surface defect detection of a cable (1) comprises a measuring part (3) and an analysis part (4), the measuring part (3) comprises non-contact distance measurement sensors (6), the cable (2) is positionable between the sensors (6) such that beams (7) of the sensors are directable to the outer surface (8) of the cable (2) to sample areas at a circumference of the cable for a length of the outer surface (L) of the cable (2) in a run direction (x) of the cable (2) for providing measurement data, and the analysis part (4) comprises a receiver (9) for the measurement data, a processor (10) for processing the measurement data providing defect detection data and a continuous 3D topographic map of the outer surface of the cable, the analysis part comprising a neural network trained for detecting surface defects of the cable and outputting surface defects detection data.
