Embodiment Construction

[0012] Repeated features are marked with the same reference numerals in the figures in which an example embodiment of a system 20 for controlling an electric motor 22 is disclosed. In some embodiments, electric motor 22 is used as a traction motor for driving a wheeled vehicle, such as an automobile or truck. More specifically, in some embodiments, electric motor 22 is positioned within or near a wheel of a wheeled vehicle. Such end-of-wheel motor applications may subject the motor 22 to significant forces (eg, forces created by bumps and other terrain irregularities). Such wheel-end motor applications can benefit from the reduction in unsprung mass resulting from the downsizing or elimination of the main shaft bearings used in conventional electric motors.

Abstract

A system (20) for controlling an electric motor (22) including a rotor (24) supported by a lubricant (31) upon a stator (25) with a plurality of stator poles (29) and stator windings (28) includes monitoring a radial position (26) and rotor angle (27) of the rotor by a controller. The system includes generating adjustments by the controller to cause the stator poles to apply a net radial force tothe rotor. This net radial force may be used, for example to cause the rotor to be centered upon a central axis (30) of the electric motor and may be particularly advantageous for the lubricant supported rotor. A motor drive provides an AC current to the stator windings as well as phase current adjustments of the electrical current in one or more of the stator windings to apply the net radial force to the rotor in a direction perpendicular to the drive axis.

Description

technical field [0001] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 62 / 711,107, filed July 27, 2018, and U.S. Utility Patent Application Serial No. 16 / 522,838, filed July 26, 2019, the contents of which are incorporated by reference in their entirety into this article. technical field [0002] The present invention generally relates to a system and method for controlling an electric motor. More particularly, the present invention relates to a system and method for controlling current flow in a stator winding in an electric motor to control the position of the rotor within the electric motor. Background technique [0003] Electric motors generally include a rotor that rotates about a drive shaft by electromagnetic interaction with stator poles that support stator windings, which are energized by electrical current. [0004] Conventional electric motors include a rotor supported on a rotor shaft that is mounted on shaft bearings tha...
