[0048] 50mm slabs of the chemical compositions shown in Table 1 were prepared in the laboratory. The slabs were hot rolled into 3.5mm plates. The reheat temperature was 1220°C, the final temperature was 850°C and the coiling temperature was 700°C. Both surfaces of the hot rolled plate were ground to a thickness of 2.5 mm to remove decarburized surface layers that may have been caused during the laboratory reheating process. The 2.5 mm plates were cold rolled to 1 mm in a reversing laboratory cold rolling mill (60% cold rolling reduction). A sample of the plate cold rolled in the salt bath was austenitized at 900°C for 300 seconds and then oil quenched. Some samples were instrumented using thermocouples to measure cooling rates during oil quenching. The average cooling rate from 800°C to 300°C was 150°C / s. The mechanical properties of the quenched samples were measured transverse to the rolling direction. A summary of the mechanical properties is given in Table 2.
