[0035] Total hip replacement prosthesis under the state of the art ( figure 1) comprises an acetabular cup 1 fixed to the pelvis 100 , a femoral stem 2 fixed to the femur 200 with the femoral head 3 attached to the stem 2 . Typical constructions today have a polymer cup insert, most commonly made of cross-linked UHMWPE, backed by a metal shell with a porous coating facing the bone. Stems for cementless fixation may also be coated with a porous layer, or alternatively rough sprayed with a thin coating such as hydroxylimestone. The head can be metallic or ceramic. In an alternative to cementless fixation, so-called bone cement, a two-component polymethylmethacrylate, can be used to fix both the cup and the stem into the respective bone.
