Problems solved by technology

Inefficient optical coupling between fiber and edge coupler due to mode size mismatch and differences in mode shape
Uncertainties in the fabrication of edge couplers, such as uncertainties in the refractive index of the material, can lead to shifts in the desired mode shape and mode size
Additionally, manufacturing defects that lead to packaging errors can lead to misalignment between the fiber and the edge coupler
These inefficiencies and other issues can cause significant coupling loss

Embodiment Construction

[0016] refer to figure 1 , figure 2 Also in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, the structure 10 of the edge coupler includes a waveguide core region 12 having a tapered section 18 that is inversely tapered with respect to the end face 14 . The waveguide core region 12 may be longitudinally oriented to be aligned along the longitudinal axis 16 . In the representative embodiment, the end face 14 terminates the tapered section 18 of the waveguide core region 12 . The width of the tapered section 18 may increase with increasing distance from the end face 14 .

[0017] The laser light may be directed to the end face 14 of the waveguide core region 12 from an optical fiber (not shown). A laser can have a given wavelength, intensity, mode shape, and mode size. The gap or space between the optical fiber and the end face 14 of the waveguide core region 12 may be filled with air, or may be filled with an index matching material, or may include a lens. The end ...

Abstract

The invention relates to an edge coupler including a grooved film. A structure including an edge coupler and a method of manufacturing a structure including an edge coupler are disclosed. The structure includes a waveguide core region on a first dielectric layer, and a second dielectric layer on the waveguide core region and the first dielectric layer. The waveguide core region has a tapered section, an end face of which terminates adjacent an edge of the first dielectric layer. The second dielectric layer includes a first trench and a second trench, each located in a tapered section adjacent to the waveguide core region.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to photonic chips, and more particularly, to structures including edge couplers and methods of fabricating structures including edge couplers. Background technique [0002] Photonic chips are used in many applications and systems, including data communication systems and data computing systems. Photonic chips integrate optical components such as waveguides, optical switches, edge couplers and polarizers, and electronic components such as field effect transistors into a unified platform. Among other factors, layout area, cost, and operational overhead can be reduced by the integration of both types of components. [0003] Edge couplers are commonly used to couple laser light between optical fibers and optical components on photonic chips. The edge coupler may comprise a tapered section of the waveguide core at the edge of the photonic chip. The mode size of the edge coupler is much smaller than the laser beam emitted by ...
