Abstract

A sorbent canister for use in performing dialysis treatment during hemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD) is provided. The sorbent canister includes an inlet port and an outlet port, the inlet port and the outlet port including threaded interfaces for connection to the inlet pipeline and the outlet pipeline for circulation of dialysate through the sorbent canister. Upon disconnection from the dialysis machine, the pressure relief cap may be screwed onto the threaded interface to seal fluid in the sorbent canister while allowing exhaust gases to be discharged when the pressure within the sorbent canister exceeds a threshold pressure, thereby preventing canister breakage. In one embodiment, the pressure relief cap includes a deformable insert having an aperture formed therein that is closed in an uncompressed state and opened in a compressed state. In another embodiment, the pressure relief cap includes a diaphragm that mates with a feature of the inlet port or the outlet port.
