[0163] Dimethyl sulfate (15 ml, 0.16 mol) and anhydrous potassium carbonate (24 g, 0.17 mol) were added to a solution of 2,3-dicyanohydroquinone (3.0 g, 0.019 mol) in 100 ml 2-butanone. The reaction mixture was refluxed for 18 hours under argon atmosphere, cooled to room temperature and the resulting solid was collected by filtration. The residue was added to water (100ml) to dissolve potassium carbonate and the resulting insoluble material was collected by filtration and dried under vacuum to give 3.10g (88%), m.p.276-280°C, 1 H NMR (DMSO-d 6 ) in ppm, δ = 7.63 (s, 2H), 3.93 (s, 6H).

[0166] Lithium methoxide (6.05 g, 0.16 mol) was added to a solution of 1,4-dimethoxy-2,3-dicyanobenzene (10 g, 0.05 mol) in 100 ml of dry methanol. The reaction mixture was pressurized to about 2000-2400 psi with nitrogen, heated to 120°C for 6 hours, cooled to room temperature and vented to atmospheric pressure. The resulting grey / green solid was collected by filtration and dried under vacuum to yield 7.08 g (70%). Q-band λ max at 714nm (DMF).

The reaction mixture was stirred at 50°C under argon atmosphere for 8 hours, cooled to about 10°C and held for 2 hours, the resulting purple solid was collected by filtration and dried under vacuum to give 4.91 g (71%). Abstract

Photosensitive compounds suitable for use as laundry detergent photobleaches are disclosed. The disclosed compounds are phthalocyanines and naphthalocyanines containing axial groups selected for their hydrophobic properties as measured by their ClogP values. A method of bleaching fabrics and a method of sanitizing hard surfaces are also disclosed.
