Embodiment Construction

[0022] Description of the preferred embodiment

[0023] The method of the present invention for determining the profile of in-core instrumentation (ICI) reductions is based on some pertinent considerations and evaluations of changes to the ICI system recommended by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC). These considerations are made in accordance with the Rules of Federal Regulations (specifically, 10C.F.R.50.59). These considerations, summarized by the USNRC, include the following:

[0024] 1. Detection of fuel assemblies accidentally loaded into the wrong position;

[0025] 2. Ensure the validity of the core power tilt estimate;

[0026] 3. Sufficient core coverage for maintaining instrumentation;

[0027] 4. Limit measurement uncertainty to meet device specification limits for various measurements, including measured peak linear heating rate, peak peak power, radial crest factor, and azimuthal tilt; and

[0028] 5. Restore full open service (or close t...

Abstract

A method for determining reduced ICI patterns is provided to achieve core monitoring and surveillance and other required functions using fewer ICIs. Candidate ICI patterns having a reduced number of ICIs relative to the existing pattern are first selected according to predetermined selection considerations. After selection, the candidate patterns are evaluated according to predetermined evaluation criteria.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to pressurized water nuclear reactors (PWR). More particularly, the present invention relates to in-reactor instrumentation patterns for a reduced number of pressurized water nuclear reactors. background of the invention [0002] Pressurized water nuclear reactors are equipped with instrumentation equipment manufactured to measure the neutron flux at certain points in the reactor core at regular intervals and remotely. The measuring instruments and sensors installed in the nuclear power plant are used to measure different types of radiation (mainly neutrons and gamma rays). Additionally, non-nuclear instrumentation is installed to measure process parameters such as temperature, pressure, flow, and more. Each instrument is part of a channel, and each channel includes a sensor, signal transmission line, amplifier, or other electronic device, and a measuring instrument, indicator, or recorder at the other end. Channels ...
